Jeannette G. Abbey, 97, of Brookings, SD died Monday, February 23, 2009 at United Retirement Center, Brookings, South Dakota at the age of 97.

Jeannette was born on December 17, 1911, in Huron, SD, the daughter of William and Emma (Felix) Gagnon.

Jeannette received her education in Huron, and received her college education at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN, for two years before attending the University of Minnesota.

In 1932, she returned to Huron and operated the family dairy business until 1942. In 1942, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Abbey and then moved to St. Paul, MN.

In 1945, she purchased the Clarin Studio in Brookings, which she continued to operate as the Jeannette Abbey Photography Studio, until her retirement in 1971.

She was the first woman to have owned her own business on Brookings Main Street.

Jeannette will be remembered in Brookings and throughout the area for her work in the Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Women, and other civic organizations.

Her interest in music and the arts was known not only in Brookings, but in the upper Midwest through her work with the Aeolian Music Club, the Metropolitan Opera productions in Minneapolis, and her assistance to young people in both the visual and performing arts.

Among numerous other accomplishments, Jeannette was the first women in South Dakota to be a licensed pilot and she was a member of the 99ers, a group of the first 99 women pilots in the United States!

She is survived by her Godson, nephew Wynn R. Juran of Naples, FL, and his children Elizabeth, David, Sarah, Katherine, Megan and Caroline.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; William and Emma (Felix) Gagnon and her sister Lois.

Visitation was from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, February 27, 2009 with a 6:00pm Wake Service at Rudes Funeral Home, Brookings.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30am Saturday, February 28, 2009 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings.

Burial followed in Saint Martin Catholic Cemetery in Huron, South Dakota.
