Daughter of Henry John Abeln (b. 1885 d. 1956) and Emma Abeln (nee Abeln)

Loraine P. (Abeln) Aalseth, 85, passed away Nov. 24, 2015 at St John’s Lutheran Home.

Loraine was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Rochford, S.D., in the Black Hills. She was raised in Rapid City and attended the South Dakota School of Mines, where she met her husband Earl. After marrying on Aug. 19, 1950, they lived in North Dakota and Colorado before landing in Billings in 1954. Loraine was a stay-at-home mom, and then she worked at the Yellowstone Boys Ranch and Western Manor Nursing Home as the Dietary Manager.

An active and involved person, Loraine led Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls and later sang with Sweet Adelines. She cooked and baked creatively, and was an accomplished seamstress. Her daughter Carole wore a formal gown and state costume she designed and made for the Miss USA Pageant. Loraine enjoyed the great outdoors, including camping and hiking, and even backpacked the Cooke City to East Rosebud trail in the Beartooth Mountains. She passed along her love of nature, teaching her children the names of wildflowers and graciously allowing many and varied family pets. Later in life, she and Earl were active in Kiwanis and Pachyderm Club.

Loraine and Earl were long time members of First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years and participated in Cursillos. Following a stroke over 20 years ago, Loraine was faithfully cared for by her husband Earl and daughter Robin. Susan Tonn, who was hired as a caregiver, became a dear friend to Loraine. Despite her disabilities, Loraine retained a strong faith and her quirky sense of humor, always having a good joke to share. Her clever mind and amazing memory allowed her to triumph at Trivial Pursuit and delight in Jeopardy. While living in care facilities the last 11 years, she greatly appreciated the FUMC Handicap Van Ministry volunteers who faithfully transported her to church each week. The staff at St John’s Lutheran Ministries provided loving, patient care these last three years.

Loraine was preceded in death by her husband, Earl P. Aalseth Sr. She is survived by her son, Earl P. (Dorothy) Aalseth, Jr, and their daughter, Virginia (Jared) Bassetti; daughter Carole (Bob) Dellinger, and their children, Matt (Sarah) Dellinger, Elizabeth Dellinger, and Andrew Dellinger; daughter Robin Aalseth; and daughter Sarah (Scott) Holmes, and their children, Aaron (Elissa) Holmes, and Heidi (Dan) Belatti.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Nov. 30 at First United Methodist Church, 2800 4th Ave. N. Interment will be held at a later time. Memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church Handicap Van Ministry. Condolences can be left at www.smithfuneralchapels.com.
