Our great, great, great grandfather

Son of Charles and Mary C Sampson Adams

Husband of Harriet Maria Hendley

Father of Harriet Maria Adams Walcott (wife of Aaron Francis Walcott) and Mary Crocker Adams.

Nathaniel and Harriet Maria Hendley were married 4/5/1838, Boston, MA by Rev Otis A Skinner.

Funeral arrangements by BF Smith undertakers, 251 Tremont Street, Boston.

Nathaniel was the third generation of Adamses to begin life in Kingston, MA. He did not stay long, though. When he became of age, unsatisfied the rural life his parents and grandparents had prized, nor wishing to take to the sea, Nathaniel sought his fortune in Boston. There he began his working life as an apprentice mason. His days as a journeyman mason were few, and soon took over contracting responsibilities himself. The list of his buildings is long and includes a school, church, observatory, orphans' asylum and other public and private edifices.

Nathaniel's greatest pride was his company's construction of the base of the Forefathers Monument in Plymouth upon which was placed a colossal statue representing the landing of the Pilgrims.

Nathaniel had a keen interest in family history. He, along with other descendants of Francis Adams, met in 1858 to discuss ways and means of producing a genealogy of the Kingston Adams line. Any money left over after expenses would be used to erect a monument on the grave in Kingston of Francis and Mary Adams. Finally, in 1861 the Adams genealogy was published.

Nathaniel Adams died January 12, 1880 and was survived by his wife, Harriet Maria Hendley Walcott, and two daughters, Maria and Mary. Daughter Harriet Maria, married Aaron Frances Walcott, merging the Adams and Walcott family lines.
