He married Sarah Luvinia Duncan on 12 April 1855 in Louisa County, Iowa. They had at least 7 children. James was a farmer and carpenter.

Sarah Lavinia died in 1887.

James moved the family from Wayne County, Iowa to Box Butte County, Nebraska in 1886.

James married a second time to widow, Mrs. Margaret Carson.

Death of J. R. Acheson

J. R. Acheson who has been very ill for some time, died at his home at 1007 Box Butte Avenue, at eight o'clock last evening. The funeral will be held at three o'clock this afternoon at the First Presbyterian church, Rev. J. B. Brown will conduct the service. Source: The Alliance Herald 31 July 1913, page 1.
