Samuel Wallace Atcheson, age 18, a resident of Columbus City, Iowa enlisted as a Private on 24 February 1864 in Company C, 11th Iowa Infantry. He was mustered out on 15 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Samuel served with his brother, A. D Acheson. and two first cousins, twins Ramsey and Samuel R. Acheson in the same company. He married Rebekah Jane 'Jennie' McConnell on 30 August 1866 in Washington County, Iowa.

Sometime before 1872 they moved to Nebraska where their daughter, Mamie was born. They were back in Iowa by 1875 when son, Benjamin was born.

They were in Washington County, Iowa in 1878 when daughter, Muda was born but had moved to Louisa County, Iowa by 1880.

According to the 1900 & 1910 United States Federal Census' they were parents to 10 children, only 3 living.

"Samuel Atcheson died Monday at his home in Columbus Junction at the age of 56 of pneumonia. He leaves a wife and three children, Robert of Kewanee, Ill.; Muda Acheson, and Mrs. John Bliven of Columbus Junction. In 1864 at the age of 16 he entered the army.
