Don was born on June 8, 1945 in Sterling, CO to John and Anna (Ertle) Gertner. He was the youngest out of 13 and the only child born in a hospital. He graduated from St. Anthony High School and served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 5, 1965 until Sept. 17, 1971. He worked for the City of Sterling for 44 years as a Heavy Equipment Operator and a Foreman in the Street Department. He married Mary Jo Ollenberger in 1972 in Sterling and they were married for 5 years. He later married Sylvia Vigil on March 17, 1984 in Sterling.
Don was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He enjoyed camping, fishing, classic rock music, tinkering on cars, and driving around the town and country early in the morning.
He is survived by his wife Sylvia Vigil-Gertner of Sterling; daughter Caroline (Matt) Powell of Grand Junction; grandchildren William Jr., Christopher, Joshua, Hope, Faith, Jimmy, Daniel, and Nicholas; daughter Charlotte (Adrian) Gertner-Cox of Sterling; step-son Terry Vigil of Fleming; siblings Gabriel, Clarence and wife Dorothy, Lawrence and wife Janae, and Clara Marie all of Sterling; Josephine Amerin of Plains, KS, Virginia Amerin and husband Ralph of Johnson, KS, Sister Leonette of Milwaukee, Margaret Clapham of Denver; sister-in-law Florence of Sterling; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his golden retriever Phoenix.
He was preceded in death by his son Christopher Lee Gertner; parents John and Anna; siblings John Jr., Anna Mary Bretz, Marcus and David.
