Nellie is the daughter of George Thornton and Diana Walker of Indiana. She is a sister to Alta Maud Thornton Miller. Growing up, their father worked as a brickmaker, but in his later years, in Kalispell, MT, he was employed as a janitor.
Nellie first married a Martin and the 1910 census shows her as a live-in maid in Hellgate, Missoula, MT. She married Jake Abuia (Abuya) in 1915, presumably following the death of Mr. Martin. Nellie and Jacob lived in Missoula, MT where he worked as a tailor. It appears she was in care at the state hospital only a couple of years before her death of coronary occlusion.
