Ann Wheeler Abernathy, 86 of Colonial Heights, died Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Tri Cities Hospital. She was born on May 6, 1937, to the late Parker Y. Wheeler and Reba H. Wheeler. Mrs. Abernathy graduated from Petersburg High School in 1954, and Longwood University in 1958. She began her career in the Petersburg Public School system as a High School English teacher and continued as a school librarian for Prince George County Public Schools. She was a devoted member of First Christian and Colonial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 70 years. She is survived by her husband, of 64 years, William I. Abernathy of Colonial Heights; her daughters, Reba Kay A. Rockett (Jon Bane Bear) of Dewitt, and Alta A. Twiford and husband, Scott; her grandsons, Parker, and Preston Twiford of Chesterfield County. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday November 15, 2023 at Colonial Christian Church, 295 Dunlop Farms Boulevard, Colonial Heights, 23834, with the Reverend Wendi Mar, LeGrande Abernathy and the Reverend Jill Jordan officiating. Entombment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
