Jergen Russell "Jug" Aarthun, a former Toledo resident who later lived in Perrysburg, died on Friday, June 1, 2012, at his home in Severn, MD.
Active until the end, he was playing tennis a few months before he passed away, surrounded by his children, from renal disease at the age of 91.
Jergen was Vice-President of Max R.H.Treu Inc., a distributor of Anheuser-Busch and Stroh's beer throughout Toledo and Northwestern Ohio during his working years.
He is pre-deceased by his wife of 68 years, Katherine; daughter of Max R.H. Treu, who founded the company with partner Leo Munch. Katherine died in April, 2011.
As a United States Marine veteran who served in the Pacific during WWII, "Jug" saw fierce action in the bloody Okinawa campaign. He only began to share stories about his military experience with his family later in life. He had also been a licensed pilot who proved his skill by landing his Cessna in a farmer's field when the engine failed. The plane and passengers were left without a scratch, according to the AP story.
Jergen Aarthun is survived by sons, Steven and Jeffrey and by daughters, Julie and Jane; his grandchildren, Amy, Andrew, Kathryn, Stefanie and Sarah also survive him, along with two great-grandchildren.
A funeral, with USMC color guard, will be held Saturday, June 9, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glen Burnie, MD.
