During her early working years, June was employed as a dental technician in Maddock and a dairy research lab technician at OSU and SDSU. She enjoyed singing, reading and writing, with work published in the South Dakota Conservation Digest, but particularly enjoyed being outdoors in nature, canoeing, camping, fishing and hunting with her husband and family.

In 2007 she fulfilled a life-long dream of visiting her ancestral homes near Oslo and Bergen, Norway.
