Mrs. Abernathy, 71, of Charlotte, died Friday, September 25, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center-Charlotte.
Born in Bakersville on January 25, 1938, JoAnn was the daughter of the late William Doby Burleson and Hazel Mae Ledford Burleson.
She had spent her earler years in the Bakersville area before moving to Charlotte 45 years ago. JoAnn was a member of the Baptist Faith and had been employed as a binder with Belk Printing.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh, who passed in 1993.
Mrs. Abernathy is survived by her son, Richard Abernathy of Charlotte; brother James (Dianne) Burleson of Newland; and sisters Bernice Peters of Spruce Pine and Mary Lee (Sanford) Goins of Merritt Island, FL.
A graveside service will take place on Thursday, October 1st, at 2pm at the Cane Creek Cemetery in Bakersville.
