John A. Large was born in either Franklin or Licking County, Ohio. He was the son of Thomas Large and Sarah "Sally" Jane Stilwell. John served two tours in the Civil War. The first was in Company B, 55th Indiana Infantry and the second was in Company K, 8th Ohio Cavalry. He married Mary Jane Fry on March 29, 1877. They had 13 children, 8 living to adulthood. Those eight children were: Emery V., Elva V., Vada E., Laura L., Lutie M., Ralph A. and Estella Ruth. John died on January 23, 1908 at his home in Delong, Fulton County, Indiana and was buried on January 26, 1908.
