Charles enlisted for Civil War army service in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 9, 1862, at Elyria, Ohio(LorainCounty), as a private, for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. He was mustered out at Raleight, North Carolina, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina, at the end of the war. His father, Lucius Abbey, served in Company K of the 103rd and is buried at Knoxville National Cemetery.

First wife: Louise(1843-1920). Second Wife: Mary McGregor(1862-1941).
