Jane E. Aaron, 69 years old, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021 at Memorial Hospital. Janey was born in South Bend on April 7, 1952 to the late Paul Hoff and Charlotte (Berry) Hoff Lahey. Shortly after Janey earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Ivy Tech, she decided to dedicate her time to starting her family. Over the years, she went on to work and retire from Indiana Bell as a telephone operator. Janey was an active member of St. Matthew Cathedral and a Eucharistic Minister. On September 9, 1972, she was united in marriage to Jeffrey Harman who preceded her on March 13, 2003. On November 26, 2005, she married Daniel Aaron, who survives.

Along with her husband Daniel, she is survived by daughters, Johanna Kelsey of South Bend, Julianna (Daniel Stellburg) Harman of Minneapolis, MN, and son Joshua Harman of Michigan. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Fletcher, and Maxwell Kelsey and Isaac Stellburg. Janey is also survived by her sisters, Peggy (Tim) Brietenbach of Ohio, Jary (Marc) Dyer of Virginia and brothers, Joel (tracy) Hoff of Michigan, Paul (Karen) Hoff, Tom (Jane) Hoff, Jeff Hoff, Tony (Sara) Hoff all of Indiana. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Wilson Kelsey and son in law, Scott Kelsey.

Janey was many things, but idle was not one of them. Whether being a good partner or having a good hand, Janey spent decades in her card club, making it her longest, and most satisfying relationship (Don't tell her husbands). Everyone she spent time with became family and she treated them as such, showing them love the best way a mother could, by feeding them. She could take 30 pounds of meat and still wonder if it was enough to feed 15 people. It didn't matter if she was feeding a family or the neighborhood, or sneaking the kids carrots, Janey did in style, dressed to the nines. Unless there was a pool around of course- she would not hesitate to jump from a fancy dress to a swimsuit. You would think the year her mother sent her to charm school would have toned her down, but the only way Janey ever knew to go was up.

Janey was feisty, sharp and knew how to hold her own with the best of them, because she was the best of them. These attributes made her an ideal advocate for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). Because although Janey knew how to have fun, she also knew how to get things done. She saw to it that she was a voice for the most vulnerable in our community. She understood love and hope and because of that she also understood grief and this understanding made her a support for her family, to her friends, to her coworkers and to the greater community.

Even in her final months, you could see the life in Janey's smile, in her words, in her inability to let anything ruin her day and her ability to always see the positive.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 27, 2021 from 3:00-7:00 p.m., where the Rosary will be said at 4:00 p.m., at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, where masks will be required. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, May 28th at St. Matthew Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. with visitation an hour before. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Janey's honor can be made to NAMI St. Joseph County, P.O. Box 4474, South Bend, IN 46634. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
