Obituary from flammfh.com:
Norio Abe, 94, of Saint Anthony, ID, passed away on January 11, 2021 at Carriage Cove Short Stay Rehabilitation.
Norio Abe was born on February 22, 1926 in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi, Japan. The fifth of eight children born to Zenshiro and Matsuno Abe, he was in raised Hebita-mura Oshika-gun Miyagi, Japan. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his childhood playing in the mountains near his home and catching and raising birds. His mother died at age 46 when Norio was 14 years old.
He began working from an early age and served for a short time in the Japanese Navy during World War II. Much of his early adulthood was spent out at sea for six to nine months at a time traveling to and from the South Pole on large whaling ships for Maruha, one of the largest marine food processing companies in Japan at the time. Norio worked as a cook on these ships preparing meals for more than 200 crew members.
On one of his return trips from the South Pole, he was asked to care for a penguin. He fed the penguin very well and kept it in the freezer. The penguin followed him wherever he went on the ship, and upon reaching Japan, was sent to live in a zoo where Norio was able to visit.
Having saved his money from a young age, he was able to build his own house prior to marrying Kiyoko Sato at age 25. Twin baby girls were born to the couple, but both infants only lived for a few days. Later they were blessed with two sons. After retirement from the large commercial ships, he worked construction jobs and also sometimes worked as a crew member on small ships. Most of his life was spent away from home either out at sea or working in big cities.
Norio and Kiyoko were divorced in 2010 at age 84. On March 11, 2011 of the following year, Ishinomaki City was devastated by a tsunami that followed a massive earthquake. His family in the U.S. was relieved when Norio was finally located after having been missing for quite some time after the disaster. Norio was brought to the U.S. where he lived with his son and daughter-in-law in Saint Anthony, ID for a little over nine years, just two months shy of the 10th anniversary of the earthquake/tsunami. Although not a member, he attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints each Sunday with his family and enjoyed working in the yard and garden during the summer months.
Norio is survived by his younger brother, Yasuo (Yoneko) Abe of Ishinomaki, Japan; his son, Norimasa (Tsukiko) Abe of Saint Anthony, ID; granddaughter, Miyai (Jeremy) Griggs of Idaho Falls; grandson, Daiko (Tamara) Abe of Peyton, Colorado; grandson, Hodaka (Emily) Abe of Nampa ID; and ten great– grandchildren. Norio is preceded in death by his ex-wife, Kiyoko; his son, Katsuya Abe; and six siblings: Mitsuo, Jumpei, Toshio, Yoshio, Yoshiko, and Toshiko.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation to Carriage Cove Short Stay Rehabilitation.
A graveside memorial service was held June 19, 2021 in the Wilford Cemetery.
