Edwin Aadahl went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 16th. 2021. Ed resided in James City County with his wife Elizabeth Thompson Aadahl with whom he was married for sixty-six years. They were married on October 2, 1954 after their third date.
He was born on October 9th, 1929 to Olava and Oskar Aadahl in Brooklyn, NY and was raised in Arendal, Norway. He apprenticed at a shipyard, worked on a farm, delivered newspapers, built hot plate heaters and splatter wear pots. He returned to the U.S. in 1947 with his brother Henry, who recently had married a Norwegian girl, but she could not come to the US at the time, so Ed traveled with his brother. Ed joked that they were on "their honeymoon."
Ed and Elizabeth were able to return to Norway four times with the first time being 1969 during the moon walk of Neil Armstrong.
Ed was one of eight children: Aslaug Erlandsen, Frantz Aadahl, Ole Aadahl, Sigrid Christionsen, Alfred Aadahl, Astrid Cole and Henry Aadahl, all of which have preceded him in death. Ed served the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict where he met his best friend of 70 years, Gene Burleson of Williamsburg.
He was well known in the Williamsburg area for his craftmanship, integrity and faith that he shared through his construction and remodeling company.
He also served others through mission trips to Haiti, The Bahamas, Panama, New York City, Hungary, Texas and many places in Virginia and locally on the Peninsula. Many trips were with Elizabeth and involved disaster relief such as post 9-1-1 in New York City.
Ed was a deacon and Sunday school teacher among other positions at James River Baptist Church, where he and Elizabeth were also married in 1954.
Ed is survived by his children, Richard Aadahl (Patricia), Christopher Aadahl (Katherine), Thelma Woolard and daughter-in-law, Mary Aadahl (deceased eldest son Harald's spouse) all of Williamsburg. Grandchildren include: James Guilliams, Aaron Aadahl (Sarah), Sara Maslyn (Jordan), Heather Shipe (Kyle), Holly Hoover (Jesse), Cameron Aadahl (Jordan) and Hannah Aadahl. Great Grandchildren include: Harper Maslyn.
Ed was the oldest active member of the local chapter of the Norseman Federation (Norge, Virginia), now the Sons of Norway, honoring the heritage of Norway.
Arrangements will be handled by Nelsen Funeral Home, Williamsburg. The memorial service will be at 11:00am Thursday, July 22 followed by family visitation in the sanctuary after the graveside. A reception for family will be in the fellowship hall of James River Baptist Church, Centerville Road.
