Glenna Dean Davis Ackerman, 91, beloved widow of Tom Ackerman, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at Laurel Crest Retirement Community. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. The family will receive friends following the service. Born in Hale Center, Texas on November 4, 1930, Glenna was the sixth child born to Grady and Audrey Davis. She was the last surviving sibling of eight proud Texans. Glenna was born during the middle of the Great Depression, when times were difficult for her family, which contributed to her strong character. After graduating from Pettus High School, she worked as a bank teller in Austin, Texas. Glenna attended Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, which is now Texas State University. She worked as a legal secretary, specializing in title checking, for lawyers in Texas and later in South Carolina.

Glenna's brother, Carl, brought home a handsome army buddy to meet his younger sister. There was an instant connection between Tom Ackerman of South Carolina and Glenna Davis. After years of a long distance romance, they married on June 4, 1955 in Dallas, Texas and began their married life in South Carolina. Glenna worked for Lawyers Title Company in Columbia, while Tom finished graduate school. Tom's career in public education moved them to Ridge Spring, Beaufort, Pamplico, Columbia and Irmo. They welcomed three daughters over the next ten years to complete their happy family. Lifelong friendships were formed while living in these wonderful southern towns.

Taking care of her family and being an amazing partner to her husband was the main focus of Glenna's life for many years. Glenna and Tom loved raising their daughters, entertaining guests in their home, vacationing at South Carolina Beaches, attending Gamecock football games, dancing together and traveling through the United States and Europe. In the early 1970's, Glenna began a very successful career in Real Estate. She worked for Bob Capes, Coker and Brown, and Bowen and Ackerman Realty Companies in the Columbia area. Her impressive sales helped put all three daughters through college and fund their travels.

Strong, Confident, Intelligent, Beautiful, Classy and Styling were words often used to describe Glenna. She raised her daughters to be strong and to do their best. Being Christians and part of a loving family were so important to everyone in the Ackerman family. Glenna knew the Bible and had strong faith. She was raised in the Southern Baptist church, but joined the Methodist church after marrying Tom. Union United Methodist Church in Irmo had been her church home for over fifty years and she had been a member of the Fellowship Class. Since moving to Laurel Crest, Glenna had joined in bible studies in small groups.

Glenna was so proud of her family! She loved spending time with her daughters and son-in-laws. Her most cherished title was, "Gammy", to her five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Gammy cheered on her grandchildren, gave them respected advice and loved them with all her heart. She kept up with everything that was going on with the younger generation's education, careers and love lives. Her children and grandchildren would seek her counsel because she was such a good listener, so wise and cared about them so much. She will be deeply missed!

Left to honor and cherish Glenna are her daughters, Mrs. Becky (Van) Horton of Chapin, Dr. Mary Audrey Ackerman (Dr. Steve) Storick of Columbia, Mrs. Glenna Dean (Joe) Wildt of Chapin, grandchildren, Thomas (Babs) Horton, William Horton, Ginny Storick, Rochelle Storick, Sarah Wildt, precious great grandchildren, Max, Tuck and Sutton, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and May Ackerman and nieces and nephews. Glenna was predeceased by her parents, Grady and Audrey, the love of her life and husband, Tom, sisters, Dixie Gryska, Mame McMahon, Freta VanMeter, Florence Davis, and brothers, Mack Davis, Carl Davis and Doug Davis. The family would like to say a special thank you to all the staff and friends from Laurel Crest who cared so much for Glenna! Another special thank you to Comfort Care Hospice, who took such good care of Glenna in her final days! The dedicated, loving care given to Glenna in her final weeks by Yvonne Knox is very much appreciated by her family! Glenna's daughters believe that "Von" is truly an angel on earth for the round the clock care of their mother and comfort she gave to everyone in their family. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church Building Fund or Epworth Children's Home in Columbia.
