Joseph N. Nilson, a native and lifelong resident of north central Idaho, died Thursday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital of uremia. He was. 69.

Nilson was a lumber piler for Potlatch Inc. for 20 years. He retired in 1972, as news of a peace treaty in Vietnam became known. "I hear there's a peace treaty and they'll be bringing the boys home. I thought I'd make room for one," he said at the time. But he added "I might make way for two men instead of one-it might take that many to replace me."

Nilson was born on Oct. 3. 1908 to Nils and Bertha Nilson of Troy. His parents farmed on Little Bear Ridge there.

He began his career in the lumber industry in 1945 at Troy. He worked for lumber mills at Pierce and Bovill, before joining Potlatch in 1951.

He lived at Lewiston from 1954 to 1957, when he moved to Kendrick, where he had lived since.

He married Dorothy Eleanor Hill at St. Maries in 1942. They were later divorced.

He was a member of the Clarkston Moose Lodge.

He is survived by a son, Marion John Nilson of Kendrick; five brothers. Bill and Pete of Troy, George and Theodore of Spokane, and Marcus of Hillsborough, Calif.; four sisters, Bertha Hanson of Moscow, Nettie Leliefeld of Troy, Gunhilda Antonson of Coeur d'Alene, and Josephine Calen of Clarkston; and two granddaughters. Three brothers and a son, Leonard, preceded him in death.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Moscow City Cemetery. Rev. Theodore Stumpf of the Troy Lutheran Church will preside. Malcolm's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
