James F. Byer Dies In Reno; Funeral Set

James Frank Byer, retired, pioneer Nevada livestockman and rancher, and a resident of Austin for 66 years, died early yesterday morning at the Noble Getchell home, 305 Belmont Road. He came to Reno last week after spending the winter in California. His health had been failing for sometime.

A native of Van Buren County in Iowa, aged 83 years, Mr. Byer, spent his early life of a farm. At the age of 14, he and his mother left for the far-west arriving at Austin by stage coach July 22, 1870. His home had been in the city ever since.

After following ranch work for three years he went into the ranching business for himself with a few head of cattle. Later, he owned two ranches, the New Pass and Healy now known as the Bar Ranch. Selling his interests in 1917 he retired and purchased a home in Austin.

For upwards of forty years he shipped livestock to the markets. A few years ago he became interested in mining and purchased two claims and the Stokes Castle which was built near Austin in 1897 by J.G. Phelps Stokes.

Active in fraternal circles, he served for ten consecutive years as chancellor commander of Austin Lodge, Knights of Pythias. He was also a member of Lander Lodge No. 8 F. and A.M. At one time he established a school district near his old ranch, known as the White Rock District, and he and his wife served as the first trustees.

November 4, 1885, he married Clara Triplett who died August 22, 1892. Of this marriage two children survive, Mrs. Cora Mildred Acree of Austin and Thomas W. Byer of Austin. He was married to Mrs. Emma Meyer Bonner in 1902 and she survives him. She had two children by a previous marriage. They are George H. Bonner of Austin and Mrs. Christina Russell of Ely. Of the second marriage, one son was born. He was Clayton C (Joe) Byer, well know University of Nevada graduate, who died following an automobile accident at Hayward, Cal., October 22, 1931

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Austin, under the direction of Lander Lodge No. F.and A.M., with interment in Austin Cemetery.

Arrangements are in charge of the Ross-Burke Company.
