Kay was born in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii on November 4, 1941, she finished high school in Waimea, Kauai, and then left for college in Upper Michigan at Northern Michigan University where she graduated with a degree in elementary education. She taught fourth grade at many schools including Iron Mountain, Negaunee, Rock, and Mid Peninsula, where she taught until she retired in 1996.
After retirement Kay enjoyed traveling to Hawaii every winter and spending her summers in the U.P. where Kay loved to garden, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
