Alfred Pleasant Harp was born on August 10, 1814 in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia, to Dixon Martin and Celia (Edmundson) Harp. He was born the ninth child of 13 chidren in the Harp Family.

On February 20, 1849, he married Rebecca Dozier West, in Troup County, Georgia. They had eight children: Celia Adaline, Henry Dixon, William Alfred, Augustus Franklin, Adaline Rebecca, Green Pinckney, Emerline Elizabeth and Alonzo Jackson Harp.

Alfred Pleasant Harp joined the Confederate States Army and served as a Private in the Georgia Militia (District 589) during the Civil War. After the end of the war, he returned to his family and his farm in Thomaston, where he lived out the remainder of his life.

Dr. Alfred Pleasant Harp passed away on June 18, 1880 at the age of 65 at his home in Thomaston, Georgia. He is buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Upson County.
