He developed a deep passion for football during his formative years at Temple City High School in California, where he was selected as All-CIF in 1961. He continued to excel at the University of Minnesota, where he distinguished himself as a standout tight end. He was drafted in both the 1966 AFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins and the 1966 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, but he chose to start his professional career with the latter team, where he played for one season before moving to the New Orleans Saints in 1967. He also played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1969 to 1970, during which he was part of the team that played in Super Bowl IV. He ended his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played from 1971 to 1974. After retiring from football, he established a successful business.
