Mrs Gerdes was ironing shirts for the Empire Laundry co before Oklahoma was a state, After statehood the firm became the New State Laundry. In 1936, her 36 years of continuous employment gained her nomination in the Chamber of Commerce's search for the city's oldest employee.
She was born July 27, 1862, near Salem Ill. and came to Oklahoma City in 1899 from Teutopolis, Ill. Her husband Henry Gerdes, a saloon operator in Illinois was coustodian at a downtown store when he died about 22 years ago.
Crocheting (that is how the newspaper spelled it) was Mrs Gerdes hobby and members of her family said she often would view someone's work away from home, like it and return to duplicate it from memory. She was a member of the Sacred Hear Church.
