On August 13, 1862, Pvt. Abner enlisted in Co. H 122 IL Infantry. He served a three-year term and was honorably discharged on July 15, 1865. According to the 1900 US Federal Census, William, Susan, his wife, and daughter Ella were living in MacPherson, Kansas. William and Susan were married in 1888. Their daughter, Ella, was ten years old and was born in Missouri.
