Guy Sears

Guy Sears, 63 Tumalo Ave., is in St.Vincent Hospital as a result of serious head and chest injuries received in an automobile accident near Government Camp Tuesday. Sears was returning from Portland at the time of the accident, was alone in his car and no other vehicle was involved. Mrs. Sears went to Portland Tuesday to be with her husband and Mrs., Orisa Abbott, Sears daughter, a nurse at St. Charles hospital, left last night. Mrs. Otto Pauls another daughter, from Powell Butte, is at the Abbott home in Mrs. Abbott's absence. Bend Bulletin 8/27/1942.

Sept. 1 1942 Funeral services were held here today for Guy Sears, who passed away at St. Charles hospital Saturday. His death resulted from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Government Camp as he was returning to his home in Bend from Portland. Rev. Cole from Bend officiated at the funeral. Pallbearers were Jim McGuffey, Frank McCaffery, Alvin Riggs, Dan Mustard, Clifford Worrell, and George Holbs all of Powell Butte. Sears was 63 years of age. His wife and two daughters, Orsa Abbott, and Otto Pauls survive. One sister, Mrs. Yates of Bend, one brother, LaVerne Sears, and four grandchildren also survive. He had been a resident of Bend for the past 12 years, previously having lived in Redmond and Powell Butte.

Guy was born to Augustus W & Alice (Witherell) Sear in October, 16, 1872. He met and married Nellie Wilcox and they moved to Arizona where their first daughter, Orisa, was born on Christmas Day. Moving to Puyallup, Washington the second daughter, Otto, was born. The family moved to Central, Oregon by train to Shaniko and from there to Central Oregon by stage coach arriving in 1904. Guy went to work skidding logs at the sawmill with his Percheron horses in Bend. They moved to Powell Butte to homestead. Another daughter Doris was born here but died of Diphtheria at the age of four in 1912.

Homesteading in the Powell Butte area where they hauled water seven miles with a team twice a week. Finally in 1910 the Central Oregon Irrigation Canal came through and he planted the first wheat under irrigation at that time. Guy did some stage coach driving at this time.
