A celebration of life for Dr. Doris Hill Adams, wife of the late Charles Adams, and a career educator, administrator and elected official will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23rd at First Baptist Church, 595 New St. The remains will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until hour of service.
Dr. Adams was reared and educated in Wake Forest, North Carolina. With a strong penchant for learning, she earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree from Shaw University, the Masters of Arts and the Sixth Year Degree from Columbia University and the Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) from The University of Georgia. She studied foreign language at both La Val University in Quebec, Canada and Bucknell University in Louisburg, Virginia.
A profound career educator, Dr. Adams impacted the lives of many, as a teacher in the public schools of North Carolina and Jones and Bibb County (GA). Her teaching career started in Bibb County in 1959, where she served as a teacher of English and French at Peter G. Appling High School. She was named Director of Staff Relations in 1972, Associate Director of Personnel in 1979, and Director of Adult and Continuing Education in 1981 -- all in Bibb County. She retired from the Bibb system in June of 1983. The devout educator that she was, Dr. Adams served untiringly as Chair of the Education Department at The Fort Valley State College (University) until her retirement.
Dr. Adams was elected to serve two terms on the Bibb County School Board. From time to time, she served as Vice President and Secretary. Dr. Adams served incessantly as a member of several social and community organizations which include: The Macon Arts Alliance, State Advisory Council on Vocational Education (1973 and 1975), The Democratic Party's Executive Committee, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, Kappa Delta Phi, Links Inc., Carat's Inc., Macon /Bibb County Library Board of Trustees and The Golden Sophisticates.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Chador (LaGail) Adams;
one grandson, Charles Alexander Adams; two granddaughters, Lindsey Adams and Jessica (Lyndon) Batiste; one great-grandson, Lyndon Batiste, Jr. and a host of other relatives and friends.
