OTTAWA -- Alfonso A. "Al" Mages, 93, Ottawa, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at a nursing home here.

He was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Homewood in Franklin County, to Anton and Theresa Strafuss Mages. He attended Ottawa High School and spent most of his life in Ottawa. He owned and operated the Peterson- Mages Studebaker dealership in Ottawa. He was a machinist for Kirby Auto Supply from 1946 to 1959, for Harry Smith Auto Supply from 1959 to the middle 1960s and then for Hughes Auto Supply until 1975 when he retired.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in Europe. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodge No. 803, and a former member of Warren Black Post No. 60 of the American Legion, all in Ottawa.

He married Veronica Hay on Sept. 16, 1931, in Ottawa. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Al Mages, Durango, Colo.; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Golden, Arvada, Colo.; a brother, William Mages, San Ramon, Calif.; sisters, Christina Crutcher, Merriam, Mickey Porter, Ottawa, and Ann Steen, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Ottawa.

Mr. Mages will lie in state at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa where a rosary at 7 p.m. today will be followed by visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, 66067.
