FRANCES E. AASEN

As autumn gave way to the chill of early winter, a baby girl came into this world. On December 2, 1929, Frances Elizabeth Summers was born to Inez and Will Summers. She finished her earthly journey on June 7, 2015. Born at home on the family farm near Alexandria, NE, she and her older brother, Sam, grew up during the great depression. Life was not easy in what was known as "The Great Depression": tough times, with the fall of the stock market, terrible droughts, dust storms and swarms of crop-destroying locusts. Tough times, but tough people, too. Frances was one of the tough ones. Always a survivor, she managed to overcome health issues and operations, and grew to womanhood. She married Ralph C. Hoge and moved to a farm east of Powell, NE. While living there, they were blessed with four strong, good-hearted sons: Charles, Kenneth, Harold, and Roger. At one point in time, they moved to Fairbury, NE. It was there that Frances took various jobs throughout the years. The job the boys remembered, and enjoyed the most, was when she worked at the Hested's Five and Dime Store. After school was over for the day, they would sometimes come to the store and she would treat them to a "green river," also called a lime phosphate, from the store's soda fountain. Frances and Ralph's lives took different paths and they divorced. She and the boys managed on their own for some time, until October 4, 1964, when she and Harold Aasen were wed. They lived on the Aasen farm for many years until they retired and moved into Fairbury. In May of 1968, she lost her youngest son, Roger, to heart disease; a sadness she carried with her always. Frances created a ministry that she carried out until no longer able to do so by calling each member of her church family on their birthdays to wish them a happy day. She also filled her days by collecting recipes, crocheting and doing embroidery work. After the loss of her husband, Harold, she continued to live in her little yellow house in Fairbury until the time the rigors of daily life took its toll and her health deteriorated. For the past three years before her passing, she resided at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury. Frances has to welcome her in heaven: her parents, Inez and Will Summers; brother and sister-in-law, Samuel and Ruth Summers; father of the boys, Ralph; her husband, Harold; and her son, Roger Dean Hoge. She leaves on earth to mourn her passing and celebrate her life, her sons and their families, as well as many other family members and many friends. Sons & daughters-in-law: Charles & Pamela (Wells) Hoge, Kenneth & Pamela (Nutsch) Hoge, and Harold & Rosanna (Kratochvil) Hoge. Grandchildren: Wendy (Ken) McKenzie, Lorie (Wade) Heidemann, Heather McChesney and friend Gary, Nickie (Eric) Weary, Heath (Leslie) Hoge, Lucas (Laura) Hoge, Janet (James) Vollman, Cheryl (Paul) Thompson, Amanda (Ryan) Lassley, and Scot (Anna) Mahan-Miller and 22 great-grandchildren. Frances had a strong Christian faith and would, no doubt, want to remind you all that one day she will see you all once again. Services will be Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fairbury with Pastor Joel Hahn officiating. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Faibury Cemetery and memorials will go to the First Baptist Church. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
