Cpl Carl Adams who has been stationed on the Aleutians for the past 19 months, spent Thanksgiving home with his parents, Mr and Mrs Mike Adams of Sharkyville. He is now stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. Right after he got home Carl took his gun and headed for the woods and in about two hours he pulled a 6-point buck home. He said he didn't even enjoy his deer hunting when he killed one that quick. Gladwin County Record 12/13/1944

Cpl. Carl Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Adams, Sr. of Sherman township, has won the right to wear "Boots and Wings" of the United States Army Paratroops. He has completed four weeks of jump training during which time he made five jumps, the last a tactical jump at night involving a combat problem on

Cpl. Carl Adams, of Fort Benning, Georgia, has graduated from his Parachute Rigging and Packing course. Only qualified jumpers may apply and only the better men from each qualifying class will receive this instruction. To every outfit Risers are a necessity. They are the men who keep the Troopers moving forward. They are responsible for the safe operation of every chute and it is their creed to jump any chute they have packed. A large crowd of relatives and friends attended a party at Grass Lake Tuesday evening in honor of Edwin Gatz who left for the army Thursday and for Cpl Carl Adams who was home on furlough. Pvt. Harold Ostrander is home on a short furlough with his parents and Pvt. Verl White is back in the States. They both are in army hospitals. A party was held at the Grass Lake hall in honor of Cpl. Carl Adams, who is home on furlough. Cpl. Adams has spent 18 months overseas. Edwin Gatz left Wednesday for the army and Cpl. Carl Adams returned to camp Saturday to await further orders. Records Await Soldiers' Addresses
- Scores of Records are piling up
in APO post offices because of
insufficient addresses. This is not
the fault of the Record office,
but because we have not been
given change of address as the
boys shifted from one theatre of
operations to another.
Many times we have been given
only a temporary APO address.
Newspapers; and other second
class mail does not go through
fast enough and the postal department
refuses to handle anything
but. first class mail to these
temporary addresses. An APO
with a long number after it is
only a temporary address.
For the last few weeks we have
been holding many Records for
servicemen, waiting until their
new addresses were furnished.
Perhaps some local relatives can
help us out. If you know the
COMPLETE address of any of the
following boys we will greatly
appreciate it if you will drop in
or write The Record office so we
can get their paper on the way

Five additional volunteers for
selective service swelled the
Gladwin County Draft Board's
list of eligible men to 12 during
the past week, according to an
announcement Tuesday by Chairman
Earl Smith.
The additional volunteers give
the Board sufficient men to fill
their February quota without
drafting from the Selective. Service
list of men eligible in; the
county. The county's February
quota has been tentatively set sit
a maximum of 10 men, but may
be changed if camp construction
has not gone along rapidly
enough to provide quarters for
them.
The Board points out that any
men eligible for service may volunteer
for a year in camp. Boys
between 18 and 21 who have not
registered for service may also
volunteer with their parents'
written consent.

Gladwin County draft officials
received word this week that only
four men would be sent to camp
under the Selective Service allotment
for February. The draft
board had received previous notification
that 10 would be required.
There was no explanation of
the decreased quota, but it is presumed
that construction of camp
quarters for draftees in the state
has not gone along as rapidly as
at first anticipated.
Twelve volunteers are on the"
selective service list here at the
present time and four of them
will be sent to fill the February
quota. The boys leave here for
the Saginaw induction center
Thursday morning, February 13.
Draft board officials are of the
opinion that the county's March
quota will be greatly increased if
we are to fill the requirements of
having 80 Gladwin county men in
camp before July 1st •— the
county's six-months' quota.
Men who are intending to
volunteer for service are urged to
do so at once so that questionnaires
can be filled out and the
necessary physical examinations
can be given. Any one between
the ages of 18 and 35 may volunteer
for a year of service. Those
under 21 must have the written
consent of their parents, however.
Those going to camp this month
will be sent in the order of the
dates they volunteered. The four
men who will leave February 13
are—

GLADWIN DRAFTEE TELLS OF LIFE
IN ARMY ANTI-AIRCRAFT CORPS

Camp Haan, Cal., April 5, 1941
Dear Friends:

I suppose you are all wondering how all the boys going to army camps like their new life in the army. I, for one, love it and I think I'm quite fortunate in being stationed here in California. I'm in the coast artillery, anti-aircraft and I'm assigned to one of the three inch anti-aircraft guns and it's quite exciting. When I first got here it rained nearly every day but now the rainy season is over and everything is very bright green and beautiful.

March Field is just across the road from Camp Haan and it is the second largest army airport in the U. S. The army just got some new types of planes and boy, can they ever travel! The army planes are flying over camp all times of the day and night.

I'm in Battery D, 78th regiment which is a regiment that was just formed this last winter and all the boys are new here from Michigan and Illinois. The leaders and instructors were formerly stationed at March Field. The officers and boys all get along swell and its just like one happy family.

Sees Orange Festival.
We all went a free trip to the National Orange Festival two weeks ago and it was about the most beautiful festival I ever expect to see. Everything from towers to houses built out of fruit. Today we went on an all day outing convoy to Nalfoa Beach, about 70 miles from camp. The army trucks line up with about 15 boys in each one and we have the right of way and go through red lights and all.

I went swimming in the salty Pacific Ocean and the waves were about five feet high. As I looked out over the blue water I wondered if I'd ever see the other side and really hoped that I wouldn't have to. . Most of us take our training real serious and we are learning all we can while the learning is good.

We live in tents sixteen feet square with wood floors and sidewalls halfway up and screen to the eaves. Each tent has a little gas stove and there are five men in each tent. One of my tentmates just re-enlisted in the regular army for three years. He is from Illinois, a swell kid 18 years old and I think he will really make good at it.

Escaped Germany. One boy, in my battery escaped from Germany and he saw that guy Hitler in person six years ago. He says he doesn't think Germany can invade England and he seems to know Germany quite well.

Another boy here was raised in Poland and his folks are still over there. They both think America is the swellest place in the world. Don't we all!

There are the nicest little towns around here and we can leave camp any evening after 5 p. m. and be back for duty in the morning. We also have from Saturday noon till Monday morning off and about all we do Saturday forenoon is stand inspection. We drill 7½ hours each day and the rest of the time is spent taking care of our equipment, studying, writing or reading. We have all kinds of sports here but I haven't taken much time to go out or play games much yet as we have lots more to learn in the anti-aircraft than they do in most branches of the army.

We go out on target practice in about three weeks and on maneuvers. right after that to Texas. We'll be traveling around most of the summer on target practice and maneuvers I think. It's sure swell to see the country from an army truck. Just like vacation with pay.

Misses Beaver Trapping.
I certainly have missed those beaver trap lines this spring. The weather here is about like Gladwin in June and we can see snow on the mountains all the time. Three hundred of us left Fort Custer in a bitter snow storm on February 19 and got here at Camp Haan on [February 22. We had a never-to-be-forgotten trip on a special through troop train through parts of ten states, on a southern route.

We can buy three dozen oranges for a quarter and the bus rates are much cheaper here than in Michigan.

The boys here think Hitler would be a swell guy in his place but he hasn't dug it yet and we don't worry about Italy. Nearly every tent has a radio and we get all the latest news but we can't do much about the war so we don't worry about it. I think I'd rather train here in California than anywhere else but I still miss Gladwin and all my pals plenty but we don't have much time to get very homesick. Here is hoping you all have a happy and prosperous summer. I hope Gladwin stays the same good old home town, and I hope all the boys like army life as well as I do. A POSTCARD this week from Private Carl Adams at Camp Haan, California, says that we don't even know what heat is up this way. "It's 130 degrees outside right now and even hotter in our tents," Carl writes. He says ' that Gordon Seipke is stationed at a camp about 150 miles north of him and he hopes to see him soon.
