Helen Lorraine Peters, 80 of Bowman, ND died on Friday, August 28, 2009 at the Southwest Healthcare Hospital in Bowman. Funeral Services for Helen will be on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastor Charles Swanson will officiate with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 30, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m with family being present from 7:00-9:00.

Helen Lorraine Aasen was born in Bowman, North Dakota on July 27, 1929 to Magnus and Marie (Siljubergsaasen) Aasen. Helen grew up in Rhame, ND on the farm with her brothers and sisters. They later moved to a farm south of town and attended Eden School.

Helen graduated from a beauty school in Bismarck, ND and was for a short time owner of a beauty salon in New England, ND. Helen continued hair styling many years, fixing and cutting hair for family and friends, often visiting shut-ins in their own home. She lived in Spearfish, SD with her sister Arlene and their family while working as a telephone operator.

Helen remembers what fun it was to be a volunteer performer in the crowd scenes at the Spearfish Passion Play.

Helen was joined in marriage to Donald Francis Peters on September 10, 1958 in Scranton, ND. They made their home on a farm south of Bowman, but later moved to town. Two daughters were born to Helen and Don – Cindy Marie born in 1959 and Francine Lorraine born in 1962. Helen and Don were remembered as an inseparable couple, enjoying get-togethers with friends and family and traveling.

Helen enjoyed a full and happy social life – friends were always welcome for a weak cup of coffee and some tasty baked goods – especially her delicious caramel rolls. Helen loved garage sales and second hand stores – always finding treasures. She delighted in her collection of birds, cats, bears, geese, figurines or whatever pretty bauble that caught her eye. She enjoyed all handicrafts but was especially clever with sewing and remodeling clothes. Her home was known as a haven for wayward fabric.

Helen is survived by daughter Cindy Hatlevik and son-in-law Magne Hatlevik of St. Paul, MN, daughter Francine Peters of Missouri City, TX, sister Agnes Rafferty, brother Roy (Dorothy) Aasen of Bowman, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Magnus and Marie, husband, Donald, sisters – Klara, Hilda, Arlene and Clara Maxine; brothers Morris, Ole, Kaare and Kenneth.

Helen was a member of Bowman Lutheran Church, Vice-President of the Three-In-One Homemakers Club and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
