Genzo Akagi, 80, of Ulysses, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Crowley, Colo., to Ihachi and Mika Akagi. He was a graduate of Crowley High School.

A Ulysses resident since 1956, Mr. Akagi farmed in Grant County until 1998. He was a founding member of the JayCees, served on the CalKan Co-op Board, Beet Growers Board and ASCS Board, was a lifetime member and former commander of Dexter D. Harbor American Legion Post No. 79, ran the American Legion baseball program for many years, was a member of the Japanese American Citizens League and an investor in Trendsetters. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.

On Oct. 3, 1954, he married Lillian Kido. She died in 2005. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Katashi and Shig; and a sister, Ayu.

Survivors include four sons, Mark of Grantville, Don of Fort Worth, Texas, Brett of Maple Grove, Minn., and Greg of Lawrence; two sisters, Asano Quarne of Crowley, and Sue Nagamoto of Richland, Wash.; a brother, Kaku Akagi of Caldwell, Idaho; and five grandchildren.

Funeral was at Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses. Burial was at Ulysses Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post No. 79.
