Mama Rene:

We thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday
and days before that too.
We think of you in silence
we often speak your name.
All we have now are memories
and your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake
with which we'll never part.
God has you in his keeping
we have you in our hearts.
A thousand times we cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly
in death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place
no one can ever fill.
It broke our hearts to lose you
but you didn't go alone.
For a part of us went with you
the day God took you home.

Hogan - Flanagan Families

My mother, Mamie Lorene Hogan Flanagan, was born to John T. and Nellie Mae Hasting Hogan in 19 Feb 1922. Lorene attended schools in Hays Mill and Elkmont, Alabama. Lorene was married to Otha Lee Flanagan (later divorced). And children born to them were Paul Douglas, Jo Ann, Linda Gail, David Larry, Timothy Wade, Sheila Claudean, and Pamela Susan.

Lorene lived much of her adult life as a single mother in Athens, Alabama. She was a charter member of Northside Church of Christ. She retired from ConAgra Poultry Company where she worked to provide for her seven children.

Lorene’s hobbies were making beautiful quilts which she set together and quilted by hand. The children and grandchildren were given quilts for gifts. Lorene had a love for planting seeds and watching them grow into flowers and vegetables. People would often stop and ask to buy vegetables from her garden. She gladly helped them gather all they wanted and then gave the vegetables to them. She never once entertained the thought of taking their money.

Lorene raised her children with strong Christian values. To her children she was known as “Mama”, to her grandchildren , she was “Mama Rene”, to her very close friends she was “Lert”. Lorene had sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mammie Lorene passed from this life on 2 Dec 1996 at Athens-Limestone Hospital and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Athens, Alabama . Submitted and written by Jo Ann Flanagan Mitchell, oldest daughter of Mamie Lorene Flanagan.
