Duane "Sonny" F. West, age 75, of Florence, South Dakota, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown. Pastor Reino Maunu will officiate with Derrick West and Amanda Mitzel as soloists and Leanne Giessinger as organist. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Codington County Post 17.
Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
Honorary casketbearers will be all of Duane's other nieces and nephews.
Duane Francis West, better known as "Sonny", the son of Francis E. and Annie M. (Yonker) West, was born on September 12, 1934 on a farm in Hamlin County near Hayti, South Dakota. He grew up and attended school in the rural Hayti area before moving to Watertown at the age of nine. He attended school in Watertown before joining the United States Army in 1953. Duane served stateside and in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1956. After his discharge, he worked for the gas pipeline construction before buying Powell's Gas Station. He married Shirley Ward on June 11, 1957 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. In 1965, he started working for the Municipal Utilities and retired after 30 years of service. Duane enjoyed working on his farm, taking care of his grandkids, hunting, fishing and going out to the Black Hills.
He was a life long member of the Apostolic Church of Watertown, and a member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Bob West.
Duane is survived by his wife, Shirley of Florence; his children, Kimberlie West of Sioux Falls, SD, Timothy West of Minneapolis, MN, Todd West and his girlfriend, Lori Shank of Florence, SD; his sisters, Betty Helland of Watertown, SD, Rose Jensen of Watertown, SD and Susie Appelhof of Sioux Falls, SD; his sister-n-law, Beverly West of Watertown, SD; two grandchildren, Derrick West of Florence, SD and Erica Weeks of Mitchell, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
