Mathias "Matt" Berger, 93, Center, died Jan. 25, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. CST Wednesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with the Revs. Austin Vetter and Jeff Wald officiating. Burial will be in Center Community Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, at the church, where a St. Anthony Verein Rosary and vigil service will be said at 7 tonight.
Mathias was born on March 25, 1904, at Rosebud, the son of Nickodemus and Franziska (Buschell) Berger. Raised and educated in the area, he married Regina Pfliger in 1924. He farmed south of Center for most of his life, and married Rose Geiss in 1940.
He was a member of St. Anthony Verein and Center Golden Age Club.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Elizabeth Hazel, Edith and Gene Albers, Frances and Ben Fuchs, and Katherine and John Kautzman; one son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Cleora; 16 grandchildren; and one stepbrother, Mike Gratz.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; three children, Peter, Lorraine and Mary Ann; four brothers, Stanley, Yatsin, Philip and Mike; two sisters, Rose Fried, and Eva Schwartz; and one step-brother, Ralph Gratz.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
