Fred Henke, the son of William and Marie (Feischen) Henke, was born on November 19, 1870 in Tinley Park, Cook County, Illinois. He was confirmed in 1884 in the Lutheran Church in Town Rich, Cook County, Illinois. Fred came with his parents to Hannover, Oliver County, Dakota Territory, in the spring of 1886.

On May 1, 1895, Fred was married to Rebekka Woehler. Rebekka, the daughter of Fred and Doris Woehler, was born in Cook County, Illinois. She came with her parents to Hannover in 1886. Fred's and Becca's marriage was blessed with two children (twins); however mother, Becca, passed away shortly after the twins were born, February 11, 1897.

The twins were named Rebecca and Frederich. Little Frederich became ill and passed away in 1899. Rebecca lived much of the time with Grandma Woehler. She attended country school Hannover German school, and she worked for some time in the Hannover store. As a young lady she went to Chicago where she met and married Charles Lorenz.

From 1899-1900 Fred served as the sheriff of Oliver County. In 1899, April 30, he married Sophie Margarethea Windhorst, the daughter of John Heinrich and Sophie Margarethe (Lohmann) Windhorst. Sophie was born in Wechold, Germany on April 16, 1881 and she came with her parents, brothers, and sisters to Oliver County, Dakota Territory in 1884. On May 14, 1894, she was confirmed by Pastor C.O. Engler.

Fred and Sophie were blessed with two children; Arthur born in October 25, l900, married Margaret Bauer; and Frieda Dorothy who graduated from nurses training at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, and later married William Forsyth.
