University professor, poet, translator. Captain in the US Air Force during World War II. After teaching at Princeton, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Kansas and Grinnell College, he served as professor of German and Comparative Literature at Duke University from 1955-1974. He won the Roanoke-Chowan Poetry Award for his book of poetry, A Sign is the Sword.
