Gertrude Nelson, 65, 509 W. Third St., died at the Northfield City Hospital Monday, Feb. 21, 1983.
She was born July 7, 1917, to Gustav and Petra (Overby) Haugen in the Little Chicago area. She attended Rice County public schools and Northfield High School. She married Thor Vangen June 12, 1937, at Faribault. After his death in 1967, she married Oswald Nelson Oct. 9, 1969, at Northfield. She lived in the Northfield area most of her life, and was a former employee of St. Olaf College.
She is survived by her husband, Oswald; four daughters, Beverly Ugland, Los Angeles, Calif., Barbara McWilliams (Mrs. Charles), Los Angeles, Calif., Jacqueline Loper (Mrs. Leland), Roberts, Mont., and Joni Vangen, Laurel, Mont.; one son, Gary, Reno, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; one step-son, Arnold L. Nelson, Webster; one step-daughter, Mildred Boudreau (Mrs. Louis), Northfield; nine step-grandchildren; two great step-grandchildren; two brothers, Allen Haugen, Muskegon, Mich., and Ronald Haugen, Hollister, Calif.; two sisters, Carol Hemming (Mrs. Paul), Solvang, Calif., and Thelma Aarestad (Mrs. Wilfred), Jamestown, N.D.
The funeral service was Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Benson-Anderson Funeral Home with Gaylon VanLoon and Marlon Halbakken officiating. Louise Davies was the organist and Nita Steinbrecker and Loraine Byer sang a duet.
Interment was in the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park at Faribault. Pallbearers were Rod Magsam, Elwood Anderson, Wayne Norberg, Wayne Tabor, Dale Pratt and Adriel Norberg.
