Greenleaf married Mariah Todd on 7 February 1822. They had seven known children: George S., Anson, Hannah Jane, Greenleaf, Emmett, Maria and Herman.

He served in the Union Army in the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment from 1822-1865.

Green Ackerman, a pioneer resident of this county, an excellent citizen and member of the Grand Army, died at his home at Sheffield, at7:30 o'clock Monday morning, November 9, 1891. Mr. Ackerman was in his sixtieth year, and had been in ill health for several months. He came here in 1883 and settled on a farm northeast of the city, where he resided until his health failed, then removed to Sheffield and engaged in general merchandising. He was a member of Company C 23d Wisconsin infantry and an active Grand Army man. Funeral services will be held from the Eckbart school house Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. Z. Nichols.
