DC#221 Husband: Lyle C Clark
Father: J E Roach
Cause: Menengitis
Ella Clark died in 1925, leaving behind 6 children. Richard Gene Clark was the youngest at 11 months. It's unknown how my grandparents,Joe & Hazel Mathis, living in Sioux City IA at the time, came to adopt Richard in St. Joseph, MO in 1927. But the rest of Ella's children were adopted or remained on their own in 1927. They stayed in touch with each other and their birth father, Lyle ...all except Richard.

When the other children grew up, they came back to live in St. Joseph, MO and looked for Richard for the rest of their lives. Sadly, they were unaware that Richard had been hit and killed while delivering newspapers in 1937 at age 13.

The daughter of one of Richard's brothers continued to research trying to find Richard until in July 2014, 87 years after Richard was adopted, she saw my Find-A-Grave listing for Richard Franklin Mathis... aka Richard Gene Clark. The Mathis/Rifenburg family never knew of Richard's adoption. She also had a son: Richard Gene Clark aka as Richard Franklin Mathis (adopted) Memorial #65176485
