Raymond N. Abbott, 94, died at 12:25 p.m. January 24, 2003, at his residence in Manor care Health services, Springfield, Missouri.
Funeral services were held February 7, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the United Methodist Church of Arnett, Okla., with Dr. Jene Miller, pastor, officiating; burial was in DeBolt Cemetery, Arnett, Okla., under the direction of Shaw Funeral Home.
Raymond N. Abbott was born in Stafford, Stafford County, Kansas, on February 19, 1908, to Charles Albert Abbott and Celia Louise (Ames) Abbott. His family moved to Oklahoma when he was 7 months old, settling on the Abbott farm 8 miles north of Shattuck. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a long time member of Arnett United Methodist Church.
Raymond married Marie Ethel Walton on June 15, 1929, and to this union three daughters and two sons were born. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie: twin daughters, Rayme Jean and Reatha Jane; daughter Verla Estaline; mother, Louise (Ames) Abbott; father, Charles Abbott; brother Archie Abbott and wife Clara; brother, Henry Abbott; brother, Paul Abbott; sister, Fern Riffel and husband Charles; sister Fay Ross and her husband, Joseph; daughter-in-law, Louise Abbott; and grandson, Mark Abbott. Raymond married Irene Wood in 1939. She preceded him in death in September 1998.
Raymond started farming at age 19 near the family farm north of Gage, Okla., later moving to Shattuck where he farmed several years before starting to drive gasoline transport trucks for Hagen Oil Company. Later he worked for the State of Oklahoma on the state roads of Ellis County. In 1940 he moved his family to Harmon then to Arnett where he continued to maintain the state roads around Arnett. He was later employed as parts manager for Farris-Vincent Chevrolet and after retirement moved to Collinsville, Tex., to managed a stock farm operation with his son, Ray, moving back to Arnett after selling the farm to work part-time for Miller Hardware. Raymond was very active in St. Alban Lodge 192 A.F. & A. M., receiving his 50 year pin in 1995, holding every office and serving as Chaplain for many years. He was active in the civic affairs of Arnett, holding several city offices and serving on numerous committees.
He is survived by his son, Merlin and his wife, Verla Jean of Nixa, Missouri, and their children, Valerie Smith, her husband, Paul, and children of Spokane, Washington; Joanne King her husband William, and children of Brookline, Missouri; Angela Dye, her husband Scott, and children of Pleasant Hope, Missouri; Matthew, his wife Andrea and children of Ft Bragg, North Carolina; Connie Hanna and family of McPherson, Kansas; Vickie Regehr and family of McPherson, Kansas, Kathy Thompson and family of Hutchinson, Kansas; his son, Raymond L. Abbott and his wife Donna of Denton, Texas, their children, Julie Glasser and children of Denton Texas, and the U.S. Navy; Dirk, his wife Oleta and children of Hugo, Oklahoma, and Paris, Texas; Amy Abbott and children of Richardson, Texas; Nancy Jankowski, her husband, Steve and children of Greenfield, Minnesota; sister-in-law Verna Clay Abbott of Shattuck, Okla; sister-in-law Adaline Abbott of Shattuck, Okla.; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
