Walter was born May 13, 1912, on the family ranch south of Dawson, to Wesley F. and Lillie Mae (Stuart) Nicholson. He was educated in the Belden School District, graduating from Dawson High School. He then attended North Dakota State University and later Fargo Barber College.
Walter married Anne Elizabeth Engh on July 5, 1939, and farmed and ranched near Dawson. They moved to Minnesota and operated a dairy farm while Anne taught. He also later operated a barbershop. After moving to Storm Lake, Iowa, Walter became a carpenter. Walter enjoyed 4-H leadership work, traveling, visiting family and friends. He also enjoyed golf and his favorite sport of horseshoes, in which he won many trophies and several tournaments. In 1997, Walter moved to the Minneapolis area to live with his daughter.
Walter is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Glenn Terry, East Bethel; one brother, Leslie, Tappen; two sisters, Hazel Little, Park Rapids, Minn., and Lois Arusell, Steele; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; his parents; two brothers, Clifford and Orville; and four sisters, Myrtle Vick, Olive Abbott, Eunice Eichele and Dorothy Woessner.
