Mrs. Abney was one of the real pioneers of Wyoming. She was born Frances Margaret Gill in Pittsburgh, Pa., October 17, 1859, the daughter of John and Margaret Oates Gill. She came to Wyoming in 1875 and her home had since that time been here.
She was married November 19, 1886 at Douglas to James M. Abney. This was the first marriage performed in what is now Converse County. At that time this was a part of Albany County and to secure the license it was necessary to go to the county seat at Laramie, the journey at that time being made by stage to Uva, the Cheyenne & Northern to Cheyenne and the Union Pacific to Laramie.
With the exception of a short residence at Casper, Mr. and Mrs. Abney have since been residents of this county. For thirty-five years their home has been on their ranch on the Little Boxelder, eighteen miles west of Douglas. There they have lived, respected and esteemed; good citizens and good neighbors.
No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Abney. Mrs. Percy Brockway, a niece of Mrs. Abney, was adopted and raised by them. A sister, Mrs. Bessie Erben, resides in Casper.
