IRA D. CHANEY, 83, BORN IN VIOLA


Ira D. Chaney, 83, a long-time Viola area resident, died Saturday evening of causes related to age at St. Maty's Medical Center in Walla Walla.


He was born March 31, 1905, in Viola to George W. and Maude (Simms) Chaney. He grew up and attended schools there. Chaney married Nina Lincoln in Sparks, Nev., in 1928. They farmed in the Viola area and were divorced in 1960.


He moved to Walla Walla; living there for 26 years, working as a barber.


He married Wilma Jean Hergert in January 1963 in Walla Walla.


Chaney was a member of the Elks and Eagles Lodges and enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting.


Survivors include his wife, at him in Walla Walla; one son, Bill; three daughters, Royleen Crossler; Jeannette Walser and Beverly Anderson, all of Viola; 16 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Linda Parkins of Viola; Dorothea Hollen and Lilly Abbott, both of Moscow; Four

brothers and one sister died previously.


Funeral services will be held at Short's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Edward E. Caffrey officiating. Burial will follow at the Viola Cemetery.
