They stayed one year in Ossian, Iowa, and in 1871 they came to Highland Township in Lincoln County, where they filed a homestead. The first home they had was a sod house. They became members of Lands, Moe Parish church and also the Highland Center #7 School District.
Their children were Berndt, Knutte, Ole, Steffert, Anna Orstad, Johanna Enstad and Britta Fossum. Five others died in infancy.
