He attended Shiloh School and was active in the Saline Valley 4-H Club. While attending Salina High School, he participated in heavyweight wrestling. He graduated in 1953.
For most of his life, Mellroy was a farmer, first with his father then later taking over the farm on his own until his own son assumed the reins of the family farm in 1999.
Among his adult activities were being a leader of the Saline Valley 4-H Club, square-dancing and telling or playing jokes. His memberships included St. John's Lutheran Church, Salina Elks Lodge, Salina Moose Lodge and Salina Twirlers.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was survived by his wife, whom he married on 7 June 1953; a daughter and her husband; two sons and their wives; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; an aunt; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
