Karolina (Carolina) was born January 8th, 1869 at 10:00 in the morning in Katzbach, Russia to Conrad and Elisabeth (Kust) Finkbeiner. She married Christian Engel.

In 1901, the Christian Engel family prepared for their voyage to the new world. Carolina's brother planned to accompany them, but he developed sore eyes and the trip had to be postponed for one year. In the fall of 1902, they set sail aboard a ship which was half passenger and about half freight, including cattle, for America. It was a difficult month trip with Karolina being sick and four children with them. They arrived at Ellis Island, only to be turned away and going into Canada and crossing the border in the winter time. They then boarded a train which came through at Portal, ND, then to Minot, and finially to their destination of Harvey ND, where they spent the winter with relatives who had come to homestead two years earlier. In the spring of 1903 Christian, Karolina and their four young sons loaded their belowngs onto a hayrack, took one cow, and two horses, and started out for their homestead land, located six miles northwest of Garrison, ND in McLean County. Eventually, they built a sod house. Karolina was particular about the house and ever Saturday it was throughly cleaned and readied for the Sabbath. In 1926, they moved into Garrison and lived there until her death from pneumonia on September 20, 1938. Twelve children were born to Christian and Karolina. She was well known in Garrison and a large number of people attended her funeral as she was loved by all that knew her. She was honest and fair to everyone and was ready to greet and sympathize.
