Herman Aikele, 87, of Moore, Idaho, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at his son's home in Blackfoot, Idaho, surrounded by family.

Herman was born March 11, 1924, in Moore, Idaho, to Andreas Johannes Aikele and Josephine Partington. Herman was born and raised on the family farm in Lost River. He attended school and graduated from Moore High School. He then went on to attend the University of Idaho and Idaho State University. He served his country in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

On Oct. 2, 1946, Herman married Atha Pearl Murdock in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Upon returning from the war, he purchased ground from his father and continued to farm. To provide for his growing family, he also apprenticed as a brick layer with Albert Pearson. In 1964, he and Atha opened Arco Feed and Fertilizer. His final construction project was a brick and wrought-iron fence at their ranch in Lost River. In his free time, he enjoyed singing in a barbershop quartet, music, rabbit and pheasant hunting, and woodworking. He served as a Butte County commissioner, on the ASCS Board, on the Butte County School Board and the Eastern Idaho Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Herman was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Boy Scouts, as a Sunday school teacher, in the Young Men organization, in the Bishopric and on the High Council. He and Atha served an LDS mission in New Zealand from 1994 to 1996. He and his wife served in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple for 15 years.

Herman is survived by his wife, Atha Murdock Aikele of Moore; children, Andra (Jim) Zane of St. George, Utah, Eric Murdock (Janet) Aikele of Moore, Carla (Randall) Bird of Layton, Utah, currently serving an LDS mission in the Philippines, Kurt H. (Denise) Aikele of Blackfoot and Lin (John) Wolfe of Lewisburg, Penn.; brother, Juel Aikele of Carey, Idaho; 25 grandchildren; and 62 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; grandchildren, Andrew Aikele, Kris Aikele and Brett Lamont; and a great-grandchild, Nathaniel Davies.
