Lena Montoya Chavez, 79, died Sept 13 in Memorial Chapel, Colorado Springs. She was born April 24, 1908 in Del Norte to Fernadez and Emelia Gallegos Montoya. She married Jasper Chavez Oct. 26, 1929.
She was a member of the Catholic Church; Altar Society, Sociedad Beneficiarios Independents; Territorial Daughters; St. Joseph Hospital and Nursing Home Auxiliary and a volunteer member of the San Luis Valley Nutrition Program. She participated for several years in the development of four documents of “Hispanic History of the San Luis Valley”, which was sponsored by the Colorado Humanities and the San Luis Valley Historical Society.
She is survived by one son, Robert Chavez, Santa Maria, California; three daughters, Anita Archuleta, Layton, Utah; Emilia Chavez, Del Norte; Gloria Medina, Concorde, California; a sister, Mary Abel, Salt Lake City, Utah; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited Tuesday and Wednesday with mass of the Christian Burial at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church on Thursday. Burial was in the Del Norte cemetery.
