Austin was born at Lofotten, Norway to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Anderson. He came to South Dakota with his parents at four years of age. They lived at Van Metre where Austin went to school and then worked on the railroad. He married Iola Cladwell on Jan. 3, 1931 at Pierre. They lived in Jones County where Austin farmed and worked at times on the railroad until about 1945 when they moved to a farm near Wessington Springs, then to Letcher and then to Mitchell in 1948.
