Rev. Herschel E. Whitley Sr., 83, of Mauk, Ga. and Welaka, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ga.
He was born October 13, 1920 in Taylor County, the son of James L. and Fannie Hayes Whitley. He had lived in Mauk and Welaka most of his life and was a World War II veteran. He was a member and present pastor of Moore's Chapel Baptist Church. He pastored Tazewell Baptist in Tazewell, Ga.; Horeb Baptist in Junction city, Ga.; Midway Baptist in Butler, Ga.; and Welaka Baptist in Welaka. He also worked for several insurance agencies in Taylor County and was a farmer. He was a member of Marion Lodge No. 14 F&AM.

Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 1 at Chapel of Tante Funeral Home, Buena Vista, Ga. Burial followed in Pine Level Cemetery, Taylor County, Ga. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd 9 Jan 2004.)
